The Deep Cove 200m Dash Charity

The Deep Cove 200m Dash will once again be supporting  the BC Children's Hospital's Adolescent Psychiatric Unit.  The unit is in need of a new TV for their Game room and we hope to raise funds to purchase a TV.

The kids are generally in the Unit for 4-6 weeks, which can be a long time to spend in hospital. The  Unit uses the games for entertainment purposes as well as for distraction, socialization and rapport building. The kids response to the games often fits into the Unit assessment process.

The BC Children’ Hospital is the province’s only full-service acute care hospital and serves the one million children living in BC and the Yukon. It is the only pediatric hospital in our province for critically ill and injured children and the only pediatric teaching hospital in BC, providing highly specialized training to our medical professionals.  Through its Mental Health programs, BC Children's Hospital offers treatment and compassion to children in BC who suffer from debilitating brain and behaviour disorders. The Hospital's mental health clinics receive more than 14,000 patient visits annually, accounting for over 12 per cent of all patient visits to the Hospital.

The new Mental Health Building at Children's Hospital opened in January, 2007. Here, mental health professionals manage patients on an age-related basis, rather than focusing on their disease. In addition to caring for adolescents’ medical needs, staff members work hard to address the unique psycho-social requirements of teens, and to facilitate their coping with conditions that are often chronic and complex. The four-storey centre promotes healing in a family-centered environment and is home to the Hospital's mental health inpatient and outpatient clinics and services, providing a strong population base for investigators to apply the valuable new knowledge being uncovered through their research at the adjacent Research Institute.

The Child & Family Research Institute is actively engaged in research to improve understanding and treatment of disorders affecting the brain and behaviour, mental illness and severe forms of depression. In collaboration with the Hospital and the regional health authorities, investigators at the Research Institute support children and youth province wide by working to develop better prevention, early identification, medication, intervention, rehabilitation, and other methods of care for children and teens with mental illness.

Donors to BC Children's Hospital are making a difference in the lives of sick children.
